PEOPLE, Page 79Lifted High
By EMILY MITCHELL/Reported by Wendy Cole
No, MELBA MOORE did not write Lift Every Voice and Sing,
though she's often asked if she did. Her new version of the
black national anthem could make it a hit for the first time
since it was co-written in 1900 by black poet James Weldon
Johnson. "For black kids who don't know their history," says
Moore, who sang the hymn in a Washington school last week after
a meeting with black Congressmen, "the song provides a bond."
Profits from the song -- the first single from her new album,
Soul Exposed -- will go to charity.
